Antiquity Glass Shattered By Beirut Blast On Show At The British Museum

On August 4, 2020, the Beirut Port Explosion swept by means of Beirut, creating huge destruction. Town’s cultural heritage wasn’t spared and the results will final for years.

Simply over 3 km from the blast’s middle, 74 glass vessels displayed on the Archaeological Museum on the American College of Beirut (AUB) have been destroyed.

Their restoration was initiated in a collaboration between AUB and the British Museum. The shattered vessels have been transported to the Museum’s middle and have been fastidiously put collectively piece by piece.

“The story of the restoration of eight of those vessels is a robust expression of the grief, solidarity, and restoration of the individuals of Lebanon,” said the British Museum.

For 3 months, the Archaeological Museum’s workers has labored with British Museum conservators to revive the eight mainly-Roman vessels, that are featured with a number of Byzantine and Islamic examples.

The crew made the joins between the shards seen so these scars can “bear witness to the explosion and the willpower of the individuals of Lebanon to recuperate,” the museum famous.

The vessels now on show vary from the first to the ninth century, and have bowls, a flask, a beaker, a jug, and a cup that characterize Lebanon’s cultural heritage.

The exhibition will happen till October 23, 2022, each day from 10:00 – 17:00, Room 3 – free occasion.

After the show ends, the vessels can be returned to Beirut.
